Academic advising is a collaborative relationship between a student and an advisor, who works with you to understand all the requirements, policies, and procedures students must follow to graduate with a degree.
The goal of academic advising is to:
- Assist with your transition to the University of Oregon.
- Answer your questions about core education options, degree requirements, policies, and procedures.
- Help you choose courses and a major based on your academic and career interests.
- Connect you with helpful resources for academic, co-curricular, and career interests.
- Empower you to make confident decisions about your education and future goals.
- Support you and provide guidance during academic challenges.
Remember, you are not alone in navigating your way through the UO. Your advisors are here throughout the academic year. We encourage you to make appointments with us or to come to drop-in hours whenever you have questions.
Advising in Your First Term
We highly recommend all students see an advisor in their first term. Scheduling an appointment in weeks 2-6 will give you more time with an advisor to do advanced class planning, explore majors and minors, and identify campus connections that can support you. Most advising units are available on drop-in only during registration weeks 8-9, so reach out early!
Future Advising Appointments
Your advisors are here for you throughout the academic year, and we encourage you to come to drop-in hours or make appointments with us whenever you have questions about your degree requirements, courses, major options, and more.
There are numerous advising offices on campus. Most offices serve particular majors. For example, College of Design serves Art, Art History, Architecture, and Product Design majors. Some offices serve specific student groups such as PathwayOregon recipients. While at UO, you may visit multiple advising offices depending on your major and minor, or whether you are part of program advising.
The easiest way to meet with an advisor is to come to drop-in hours, which are posted on the websites of the advising offices, or to make an appointment via the Navigate360 app. New students must claim their Duck ID and have a UO email address assigned before they can successfully sign in to Navigate.
