Module 1: Introduction to Advising at the University of Oregon

Learning Objectives
- Familiarize yourself with the general UO landscape: the UO mission statement, and various colleges and divisions at the UO, and basic student demographics
- Understand the basics of the role of advising in undergraduate education
- Understand the UO advising structure and individual advisor roles in the UO advising landscape
- Become familiar with CAS advising standards and best practices in advising
Module 2: Advising Tools and Technology
Learning Objectives
- Effectively navigate and utilize advising tools, technologies, and resources (Navigate, Duckweb, Department websites, GPA calculator, UO catalog)
Module 3: Undergraduate Curriculum
Learning Objectives
- Understand and be able to discuss the purpose of a liberal arts education and degree
- Understand the three main components of the UO Degree: Core Education, Majors, Electives
- Understand University Requirements: Credit totals, Upper Division Requirement, Residency Requirement, ABCDP* Requirement
- Have a thorough understanding of Core Education Requirements (Writing, Cultural literacy, BA Language, BS Math, and Area of Inquiry Requirements)
- Understand and be able to articulate the meaning behind the core education requirements
- Be aware of the colleges, majors and minors that exist at the UO and the resources for sharing this information with students
- Understand and know how to locate information on major and minor requirements
- Learn how to summarize, compare and contrast various majors and minors while working with exploring students or students making a major change
- Understand and be able to articulate the meaning of electives and how students can use them to explore and shape their degree
- Be able to clearly explain and translate the degree guide to students
- Be able to discuss course selection for upcoming term(s)
- Be able to accurately identify remaining degree requirements for students at all stages of their college career
Module 4: Academic Policies & Procedures
Learning Objectives
- Understand UO deadlines, policies, and procedures and how they impact the advising role
- Be able to translate important policies and procedures to students and assist them in navigating the tools and processes as needed
Module 5: Undergraduate Student Populations
Learning Objectives
- Demographic characteristics of UO students
- Student Development, Career Development, and Learning Theory
- The unique characteristics and experiences of some specific student populations.
- Equity, access and achievement issues in higher education and at the University of Oregon
Module 6: Building Advising Relationships
Learning Objectives
- Major academic and career advising approaches and frameworks
- The construction of collaborative advising relationships with students
- Active attending behavior and nonverbal cues
- Effective documentation of advising interactions.
